I wonder which SLR camera to buy. My constraints are around $600, mostly automatic, just for a beginner in photography, not too bulky so that I can carry it with me on travel easily.

You cannot avoid the bulk if you have a SLR :) I have the Canon XTi and its a great beginner camera. Its more advanced version is the XSi and a slightly watered down version of the XSi is the XS. The main difference between the XS and the XSi is the resolution (10.1 (XS) vs 12.2MP (XSi)). The XS is probably good enough if you're just beginning to experiment with SLRs. A few years down the lane you can buy a better one.
